SUNBURY ON THAMES, 16th April, 2012
- Chubb Fire & Security UK was awarded the MITIE Carbon Reduction Award for 2012, seen as the pinnacle of the MITIE supplier awards. Chubb is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
MITIE provides facilities, property and asset management for some of the largest public and private sector businesses in the UK. In only its second year, the MITIE supplier conference culminates in an awards ceremony designed to celebrate recent innovations and recognise the efforts of suppliers in working to reduce carbon emissions.
There were six categories with awards ranging from ‘People Passion’ to ‘Carbon Reduction and Sustainability.’
Chubb was given the title for Carbon Reduction and Sustainability, as it was able to demonstrate measurable reductions over the last seven years primarily at its extinguisher recycling plant in Hams Hall, where the amount of each unit recycled was dramatically increased from 40 to 90 percent.
In 2004, only 40 percent of the 9000 extinguishers taken to the recycling centre were recycled; 100% of the 8000 liters of liquid waste each week, six metric tons of powder waste each week, 30 metric tons of waste, excluding liquid and powder each month, and 120 metric tons of waster per month was sent to landfills.
Last year, the improvement was quite dramatic: Chubb now recycles 97 percent of the 500,000 extinguishers received every year, including thousands from MITIE properties. No waste is now sent to landfill from Hams Hall and many of the recovered products go to help the wider community in the manufacture of kerbstones and rubber flooring products.
Suzanne Donovan, marketing director, says there has been a very concerted effort at our recycling centre to address the amount of waste sent to landfill.
“This award is recognition of the excellent achievements of everyone at Hams Hall where practically everything from an extinguisher is now recycled,” she said.
