Project Overview
Situated along Qatar’s northeast coast, Ras Laffan Industrial City is one of the fastest growing industrial cities in the world. Spanning 248 square kilometers, it is home to the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-to-liquid (GTL) and petrochemical industries.  Ras Laffan Industrial City, run and administered by Ras Laffan City (RLC), is a directorate of Qatar Petroleum.

In addition to a variety of industrial facilities throughout Ras Laffan, Qatar Petroleum is establishing a world-class fire and emergency training center in the city. Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College will be one of the largest and most advanced firefighter training facilities in the world, offering courses in firefighting, safety and emergency response.  The college will accommodate a host of petrochemical, industrial and civil training props, as well as a state-of-the-art LNG research facility.

Solution
The vision of Ras Laffan Industrial City is to provide world-class services to customers working in the field of natural gas.  With a variety of products that support energy infrastructure, combined with expertise in this segment, UTC Climate, Controls & Securityis able to help the city achieve its goals.  In fact, two UTC Climate, Controls & Security companies are meeting different needs within Ras Laffan Industrial City – Autronica Fire and Security AS is providing fire protection for the city’s port expansion, while Kidde is supplying fire trainers for the Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College.

Project Synopsis
Autronica, which has been providing best-in-class fire detection and alarm system products for energy infrastructure projects since the 1970s, was selected to provide specialty detection systems for Ras Laffan’s port expansion.  Because the port is located in a high hazard area, the specification for its fire and gas detection calls for a system certified to the IEC 61508 Safety Integrity Level - SIL 2.  Autronica’s AutroSafe IFG system is one of the few systems that holds this approval, and was selected by Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), the main contractor for the project.

Autronica worked with CCC to develop a framework for the entire project, and then began working on the deliveries related to engineering, design, documentation, system deliveries and commissioning at Site.  Upon completion, Autronica will have approximately 200 AutroSafe SIL 2 IFG systems delivered to the various buildings and substations throughout the port area in Ras Laffan Industrial City.  These systems include both traditional fire detection inclusive of High-Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD) systems, as well as flame and gas detection integrated into the panels.  Release of CO2 and FM 200 systems (delivered by Kidde Fenwal, another UTC Climate, Controls & Security company) is also controlled by the AutroSafe systems, providing complete extinguishing release systems for the site.  Kidde  was also selected by CCC to provide an integrated fire and gas detection system for Ras Laffan.

With more than 30 years of live fire training knowledge, Kidde Fire Trainers has the experience that instills confidence in customers across segments.  The company’s installation of fire trainers at Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College will offer a wide range of courses in firefighting, safety and emergency response to governmental and industrial institutions across the region and beyond.  In addition, the college will accommodate a host of petrochemical, industrial, civil and military aviation, marine, and civil structure applications, as well as a state-of-the-art LNG research facility.  As an added dimension, specialist technical applications such as a simulated disaster areas and high-level rope rescue towers have been provided.  Kidde Fire Trainers provides specialist design assistance and will continue to provide on-site service and support.

Kidde Fire Trainers live fire training simulators enable fire fighters to replicate the intense heat, flames, smoke and chaos of a real fire emergency, in a safe, controlled and environmentally sound manner.  This training will help hone the skills of Qatar’s industrial and Civil Defence firefighters, resulting in increased preparedness of those who protect Qatar’s oil and gas installations and infrastructure.

In addition, the Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College selected Kidde Products to equip the school with fire fighting equipment and foam and deluge systems.  This is a prestigious project for Kidde Products, as its equipment will be on display to visitors at the college.
