UTC Fire & Security Products Help Customers Reduce Emissions and Resource Consumption

Toronto, Ontario, 5 October 2011 - UTC Fire & Security, a leader in environmental responsibility and sustainability in the fire and security industry, is highlighting environmentally sound and resource-efficient fire fighting, security and energy management systems at the 2011 Greenbuild Exhibition. UTC Fire & Security is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“Our commitment to sustainability runs through every part of our business – products, systems, manufacturing, operations, services, practices, research & development,” said Bruce Hoopes, UTC Fire & Security vice president of Engineering. “In R&D specifically, we are focusing on products that will help our customers save energy and resources. And many of our solutions contribute water efficiency and energy credits towards the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® certification.”

UTC Fire & Security’s Marioff business produces the HI-FOG® Water Mist Fire Protection System, which uses 70-90 percent less water than conventional sprinkler systems, causes virtually no damage, and is harmless to people and the environment.

“HI-FOG is ideal for commercial buildings such as hospitals, education facilities, heritage sites, data centers, hotels, and power generation applications,” said Lance Harry, Marioff general manager. “Because it uses dramatically less water than conventional sprinkler systems, the infrastructure required is also reduced. The pipes are thinner, the optional water tanks are smaller, and it’s easy to customize for retrofit installations.”

To meet customers’ needs for clean agent fire suppression in IT rooms, data centers, telecom switching facilities and similar applications, UTC Fire & Security’s Fenwal Protection Systems is showcasing its engineered systems designed for use with the 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. With distinct environmental benefits over other Halon fire suppression alternatives, Novec 1230 has a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1, and is safe and approved for use in occupied areas.

Visitors to Greenbuild will also be able to view UTC Fire & Security products that integrate with building or home security, lighting, HVAC and other systems to maximize efficiency and minimize resource use. The Interlogix™ Simon XT™ Two-Way Talking Touch Screen controls a home’s security system, and can also be configured to regulate the lighting and thermostat, allowing homeowners to monitor and adjust these systems remotely. The Onity™ SensorStat® DCC building energy management system allows building management to wirelessly control the lighting and HVAC remotely, significantly reducing energy usage and costs.

UTC Fire & Security is part of the United Technologies booth (#1119 North Building) at the Greenbuild Exhibition, October 4-7 in Toronto, Ontario.
