Health & Safety

Advancing workplace safety.
UTC’s company-wide Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Policy states that UTC “will not be satisfied until its workplace is safe from hazards, its employees are injury free, its products and services are safe, and its commitment to and record in protecting the natural environment are unmatched.”

In order to help successfully integrate the UTC EH&S philosophy into all acquired businesses, UTC Climate, Controls & Security has used both traditional and non-traditional approaches to managing risk.  Significant improvements in safety metrics over the past five years – including a 96 percent reduction in injuries and an 85 percent reduction in incidents requiring medical treatment – are the result of weekly relentless root cause analyses and rapid integration of injury reduction and fatality prevention strategies.

Maintaining the highest level of employee safety requires an ongoing commitment.  Some of our acquired companies have included risk factors, such as armed response in South Africa, management of cash-in-transit in Australia and Hong Kong, and a dispersed network of hundreds of service and installation branches worldwide.

Critical rules have been developed for all aspects of the business regarded as high-risk, while traditional safety programs, such as machine guarding, ergonomics, and fall protection, are a constant focus at UTC Climate, Controls & Security.  Overall, fast resolution of safety concerns, enhanced communications efforts, and stronger employee involvement have resulted in a safer working environment for employees and higher awareness.
