Striving to safeguard our future
At UTC Fire & Security we focus on protecting…. people, property, and the environment. Many of our innovative fire and safety solutions use methods, systems and materials that won't deplete natural resources. We do business in a way that supports the bottom line as well as the world in which we live. Our corporate social responsibility principles guide the way we do business – making our suppliers, our partners and ourselves accountable.
Priorities
Our environmental goals are straightforward:
Reduce greenhouse and non greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
Reduce waste
Reduce water consumption
We are aggressive in our approach to greening our products, services and operations. In fact, by the end of 2009, we had already exceeded our 2010 environmental targets. Our commitment to consistently implement control strategies has helped sustain and improve performance every year, leading to increased productivity and cost savings for the company and has helped reduce our impact on the environment
Reducing our impact
Approximately a quarter of the reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulted from upgrading to more fuel-efficient fleet vehicles, which also provided fuel savings.
Changes in manufacturing and testing protocols have reduced GHG emissions by three percent. UTC Fire & Security facilities are encouraged to identify ways to reduce their carbon footprint and become more efficient at the same time. We are proud of the work completed at our factory in Chang’an town in the Guangdong province where we produce smoke, CO and smoke and CO alarms. Since 2006 this facility has reduced industrial process waste by 77%, water consumption by 43%, greenhouse gas emissions by 38% and non-greenhouse gas emissions by 42%.
Waste elimination and re-use opportunities have contributed to significant reductions in total recycled and non-recycled industrial process waste, as well as cost savings associated with both procurement and disposal of industrial materials. Examples of this include a Brazilian manufacturer utilizes UTC Fire & Security’s excess fire hose for furniture support. A local company in England sends a by-product produced from the manufacture of firefighting foam to a composter for fertilizer used to grow lawns.
Water consumption is down 28 percent, about 46 million gallons through implementation of wastewater reduction projects and increasing reuse of steam condensate.
Goals
We are not about to rest on our success – there is still more we can do for the environment. UTC Fire & Security’s 2015 environmental goals include:
27% reduction in greenhouse gases.
65% reduction in air emissions
36% reduction in water
42% reduction in total waste
53% in non-recycled waste.
LEED®
UTC Fire & Security is also committed to ensuring that 100 percent of all new products are designed for sustainability. Many of our sustainable solutions contribute to water efficiency and energy credits for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification.
The Marioff HI-FOG® water mist suppression system is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional systems. The HI-FOG system uses 90 percent less water than conventional sprinklers and the tubing is made from recyclable materials.
Lenel’s OnGuard® security software and building solutions systems integration is capable of analyzing a buildings occupancy allowing building owners to automatically adjust temperature, lighting and power.
Fenwal’s Novec 1230 system discharges a clean agent to suppress fires quickly without leaving a residue to clean up, so there is no harm to equipment, the facility, or the environment.
AT UTC Fire & Security, our business is about safety and delivering life safety and security services and products. That is why it is important to us to ensure the health and safety of our employees and business partners, all while safeguarding our environment for future generations.
