Westminster Abbey Puts Faith in Chubb Wireless System

LONDON, U.K., December 8, 2006 - Chubb Electronic Security announced today its selection by Westminster Abbey, a major cultural landmark in London and coronation site for the English monarchy, to provide its Monitor AFx Wireless Integrated Security Management and intruder detection system.  Chubb Electronic Security is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

The new system can combine and control data from multiple independent sources via a common software application.  Monitor AFx’s wireless technology also provides ease of installation as no additional cabling is required, an important consideration for historic buildings such as Westminster Abbey.

“Wireless systems are easier to re-configure and arguably more practical in challenging environments where hardwiring would simply not be practical or would interfere with the original architecture,” said Ron Dingley of Chubb Electronic Security (CES). As part of the contract, CES will remove the redundant cabling from the Abbey’s legacy system.

“The previous system was a Chubb control panel installed more than 20 years ago, and in clear need of upgrading,” said Jim Vincent, Westminster Abbey’s Clerk of Works. “Monitor AFx provides us with the level of control and reporting that we need, whilst also giving us the ability to easily expand or extend the installation in the future.

“Another factor in our selection of Monitor AFx was the significantly lower security costs,” Vincent said. “The wireless technology meant we could avoid the installation of further control panels and cabling labour costs.  This new technology will also significantly cut down on system maintenance.  Currently, maintenance is conducted out-of-hours and sometimes on the weekends. The self-testing and automatic self-diagnosis of our new system will tell us when a detector is faulty or a battery is running low, so apart from a walk-test once a year there will be little maintenance time required.”

Monitor AFx is specifically designed to integrate and manage a site’s entire electronic security system, including point monitoring of building management sensors. The system is controlled by a front-end software package – or Graphical User Interface - from one platform, where previously each system required its own panel and cabling and operated in isolation from one another.  The Monitor AFx devices are connected using common protocols so that data can be remotely monitored and a variety of administrative and maintenance functions can be performed without the need for attendants to be physically present at each location.
