Kidde Protects Innovative University Campus

LONDON, UK, January 17, 2007 - Innovative fire fighting technology from Kidde Fire Protection Services is proving its mettle at the University of Nottingham, Britain’s University of the Year, protecting the prestigious Jubilee Campus buildings from the dangers of fire.  Kidde Fire Protection is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

The Jubilee Campus houses the state-of-the-art facilities of the Schools of Education, Computer Science and Information Technology, and The Nottingham University Business School. The campus has received many plaudits for its sustainable design, including roofs carpeted with alpine plants to maintain steady temperatures and a series of lakes that provide cooling for the buildings in the summer.

Such an innovative building design called for an equally innovative approach to its fire protection solution, with the University opting for technology from Kidde Fire Protection Services (KFPS). In total some seven fire alarm control panels have been supplied, installed and commissioned across the campus, along with more than 1,500 fire alarm devices.

"Kidde’s technology is state-of-the-art, reliable and has a very low false alarm rate, which is important at a site like this,” said James Guilford, a member of the University's engineering team that oversees the fire systems.

To reduce unwanted alarms, Kidde uses a dynamic filtration software system (DYFI) with advanced digital filtering algorithms to recognize the difference between a real fire and a non-fire incident.  The latest version, DYFI +, enables the software to be built into each individual detector for greater signal capacity and accuracy.

Built on a site that previously had industrial use the Jubilee Campus  is now a renowned example of sustainable development and a “green” academic park for 3,000 students and staff.  Opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1999, the campus has received a number of awards, including the Millennium Marque Award for Environmental Excellence, the British Construction Industry Building Project of the Year, the RIBA Journal Sustainability Award and the Civic Trust Award for Sustainability.  The Jubilee Campus also won the praise of the Energy Globe Award judges in 2005.

Kidde Fire Protection Services (KFPS) sets the benchmark in providing and maintaining active fire protection products and systems in the UK.  KFPS offers customers a single source of supply.  KFPS is part of UTC Fire & Security, which provides fire safety and security solutions to more than one million customers around the world.  Headquartered in Connecticut, UTC Fire & Security is a business unit of United Technologies Corp., which provides high technology products and services to the building and aerospace industries worldwide.
