UTC Fire & Security Seizes Opportunities in Middle East

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, January 17, 2010 - UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), is expanding its presence in the Middle East, where rich oil and gas reserves, power generation, and new construction are providing significant opportunities.

The company is highlighting its new joint ventures in the region when it participates in the Intersec trade fair Jan. 17-19, in Dubai. The event is an international venue for the fire safety and security industries, and it is expected to draw more than 17,000 visitors from 96 countries.

UTCFS identified the Middle East as a growth region in 2007/2008, and despite challenges in a difficult economy, the company has made significant strides, according to John Sellens, Middle East managing director. “The project business is showing tremendous activity,” he said.

In Qatar, for example, UTCFS has formed the Kidde Qatar Joint Venture with Protec, which is part of the Arabian Construction Engineering Company. The project includes fire training equipment from Kidde Fire Trainers, fire fighting products from Angus, trucks from Sides, security from Lenel, and water mist systems from Marioff.

A joint venture in Kuwait, with the Al Mulla Group is being established, to accelerate sales of several UTCFS product lines. Kidde Safety (portable extinguishers), Kidde Fenwal (suppression), Guardfire (fire fighting systems), National Foam (fire fighting) Lenel (security), Noha (hose reels and cabinets), and Chubb Securite’ (network panels) are among the businesses contributing to the effort.

Kidde Fire Trainers won several significant contracts during 2008/9, including fire training simulators for Qatar Petroleum at Ras Laffan, a large concentration of oil and gas facilities.  UTCFS has also signed a master distributor agreement to provide fire and security products in Russia, Central Europe, CIS countries, and part of East Africa.
